Dreams like nightmares are made of the same material. But this particular nightmare purports to the only dream we can have: a model of development that adores things and scorns life….

Poverty is the pivot on which most contemporary problems rest. Many problems such as those of population, food insecurity, illiteracy and public health will solve themselves if poverty is eradicated. Caught in the quagmire of desperation and frustration the poor symbolize a rudderless ship caught in a hurricane. The lethargic and unjust system does not inspire their confidence. The extravagant lives of the filthy rich and the constantly soaring prices of food items and utilities are driving them against the wall. The futile attempts to fulfill their basic needs increase their frustration to a level that they are unable to distinguish between the good and the bad. This is when most of them resort to all sorts of hideous crimes: rape, sexual molestation, prostitution, wife and child abuse, murder, etc.

A state of mind when a person feels mentally or physically oppressed due to pent up aggression and allows his animal instincts to take over his actions and thought sequences, which instigate him to take revenge of actions inflicted upon him by the society.

Following are some of the main causes of frustration in the poor people of Pakistan:
  • Lack of basic necessities of life.
  • Continuous rejection from society.
  • Ostentatious life styles of higher echelon.
  • Inability to find employment.
  • Unhealthy childhood environment.
  • Constant nagging by parents to ease off financial burden.
  • Deplorable living conditions that cause a person to be mocked upon by peers and friends. Thus, intensifying inferiority complex.
  • Demise of loved ones in excruciating and intolerable circumstances causing negative remorse.
  • Wrongfully accused persons.
  • Being labeled as "Non-productive", "Useless" or "Burdensome" by family members.

  • Production of future rapists/abusers.
  • Complex of deprivation.
  • Addiction to drugs and alcohol.
  • Affliction of abuse on other family members as retaliation.
  • Disrespect for all authority.
  • Victims take up prostitution as a profession.
  • Victims take to kidnapping, sexual molestation and rape as a revenge on what was inflicted upon them.
  • Quarreling parents causing a most uncongenial home environment for the children.

Deviation is any failure to conform to customary norms. The degree of deviation varies from man to man. Some are more deviant than others. Some people get into high rate of deviation and become criminal. Delinquent behaviour is not equally evident in all cases. Some cases are detected and reported to the police, some are detected but are let free after mild admonish and a large number of them remain hidden from others in Pakistan. On its deviation the social control is disrupted. The deviation of religious laws is called sin. The deviation of customs and rituals is called vice and the deviation of social laws is called crime. Theft, murder, rape, abduction and forgery are crimes, sins and vice as well.

On dissatisfaction of basic needs, the poor are economically disturbed. The husband who returns home jobless at dusk lets out his aggression by beating up the wife or kids. In most cases, whatever he earns, he spends it on drinking, drugs or on prostitutes. He even forces himself onto the wife when he is unable to fulfill his sexual appetite elsewhere. He is violent, bitter and resentful and in the process injures her badly. His actions produce successive members of the clan.

Victims of abuse in their childhood find comfort in child molestation or rape. In committing these heinous crimes, they derive ecstatic pleasure from the screams and cries of helpless victims. Once a wrongfully accused man from a "Basti" sought to take revenge from the legal system by kidnapping children, burning them in drums of Sulphuric acid after having sexually molested them and disposing off their remains in the sewerage. He killed about 90 children in a period of 3 months.

There is actually no end to the actions of the sick mind. Many women and young girls resort to prostitution to keep the stoves burning in their homes. It is actually not easy for them to indulge in this sinful deed, but the love for their younger siblings who have not had anything to eat in days makes them do so.
